When opening an insurance claim for an auto accident, the representative may refer you to a “direct repair network shop.”  We think you should take the time to research a shop yourself before you commit to these referral shops. Usually the representatives you are opening the claim with are not local and sometimes are not even in the same state as where you are calling from. Generally, they are referring you to a shop from a computer screen and are not aware of the shop’s reputation or quality. Many insurance companies offer incentive to the representatives to refer to network shops. After an accident, your emotional state is less calm than normal and the easiest choice would let your insurance company choose a shop but it may not be the wisest choice. In California only you have the choice as to where your vehicle is repaired. If an insurance company insists on taking your vehicle to a direct repair shop without giving you an option than that is an illegal practice called “steering.”

Let us inform you about some of the problems we encounter with “direct repair network programs.” Insurance companies contract with collision repair shops and refer their policy holders to them so their volume is higher. In order for these shops to attain these contracts the shops must agree to: a reduction to their own labor rates, discounting on parts, usage of non original or aftermarket parts and sometimes the elimination of certain procedures necessary to restore your car back to pre accident condition. The direct repair shop’s loyalty shifts from the customer to the insurance company as their main focus is to keep their contract with the insurance company.
